Frequently Asked Questions
Q) Why is the Cembrit system more Hurricane resistant than other forms of roofing?

A) The primary reason is the method of fastening. Most roofing systems rely solely on nails driven into the roof deck. Cembrit on the other hand has a unique system of four 4" x ¼" Lag screws per panel. These are screwed into 2" x 2" horizontal battens, which in turn are screwed through the roof deck directly into the rafters or trusses. This means that the panels are structurally tied into the framing of the house and not just to the decking.

Q) Ok, so what about Termites?

A) Termites eat materials, such as wood, cardboard and other organic materials. Cembrit panels are manufactured from a fibre-reinforced cement, which does not attract Termites.

Q) How about moss and lichen?

A) Due to its smooth surface, Cembrit does not support the growth of moss and lichen, making it extremely suitable for collecting rainwater.

Q) Will it insulate my roof against the heat?

A) Unlike Asphalt, Cedar, Ribbed Steel and other "flat" roofing materials, Cembrit is corrugated which allows air to circulate under the panel. As the roof heats up in the day, the hot air rises and pumps out through the unique ridge venting system. The eaves are closed with an impregnated foam strip profiled to the tile. This allows the air to flow in; but keeps the birds and the bugs out.

Q) Is it difficult to install?

A) No, normally any roofing company or builder can install the system. Remember, Cembrit is in panel form, so it is similar to installing a small sheet of plywood. In fact you even cut it with a circular saw and carbide tipped wood blade. You do not use a cement blade.

Q) Will the panels be affected by salt from the sea?

A) Cembrit panels are manufactured from Cement; therefore they resist the affects of salt air or acid rain. However, the panels should be installed with corrosion resistant lag screws. We can supply these if you cannot obtain them locally. As an added benefit, they will not rot, rust or corrode and are class “A” fire rated - they will not burn.

Q) What about the environment and Asbestos?

A) Nothing in the Cembrit System contains Asbestos and the whole system is environmentally friendly. Unlike asphalt shingles, Cembrit does not need to be stripped off every few years and taken to the landfill site, where they leach into the ground water. Cembrit can actually be installed over a layer of shingles, which eliminates the cost of their removal.

Q) How do I know what I will need for my roof?

A) If it is a new building, you should send us your Architectural drawings, if an existing roof we will need a good quality sketch drawing with all the dimensions and roof pitch. The materials required for your roof will be calculated from these drawings. We will then submit the full quotation to you; with all the materials you will need itemized, what it’s going to cost and how much the shipping will be. If some of the installation materials are not available locally, we can supply them from our Canadian offices.

Q) What’s the difference between the B6 & B7 panels?

A) The B6 is a larger panel covering 11.7 sq ft. and is normally used for commercial, institutional and affordable housing. The B7 is a smaller panel covering 5 sq. ft. and looks more like clay tile when installed. It is therefore used mainly for residential and hotel roofing where superior aesthetics are required.

Q) What’s the B9 Panel used for?

A) The B9 is a non-coated panel, which is only available in the natural cement grey colour. It is manufactured in exactly the same way as the B6 and B7 and has all of the same accessories and benefits. The B9 panel is available in 4ft, 6ft & 8ft lengths. It is primarily used for Agricultural, Industrial and Commercial uses.
